(200) How to Tweak Your Disc Detainer Pick

My vises are made by Panavise, a U.S. Company.  The one with the wide jaws is the model 350.  The smaller one is the model 301. Both have the 312 Base mount – www.panavise.com

  1. what are ways to make it work on deeper sobos, can the pin be clamped further out? can we file the sides of the tension grooves down farther since there is room to do it?

  2. Err.. yet another note. To the tensioning outer part this time. I had a problem that it sits too deep in the lock a grabs two discs, not just one. Filing almost a half of the end of the tensioning notch helped me a lot for some of the locks in my "disc detainer lock bucket".

  3. One more observation about the tip. The shape doesn't matter that much, as long as you keep all edges as parallel to the shaft as possible and the corners decently sharp. You might even try to make a slight "U" shape on the outher edge. If the cornes and edges are rounded too much (erm.. what's the right english term.. convex?,) the tip tends to slip on the side out of the ring, you're trying to rotate.

  4. It is possible. Place it next to the first disc in the lock and see if it is long enough. If you cut it too short, all you can do is buy another one. sorry.

  5. I have one of these picks and I have done what you have said, but I cannot turn a single one of the detainer's, have I made the pick too thin by taking too much off? Thanks.

  6. You can find them in discount stores, Asian markets, flea markets, the Dollar store, and some Salvation Army stores. I got mine in a Salvation Army store. I've also seen many of them for sale on eBay – just search for "Disc detainer" or "high security" locks and some will pop up.

  7. I have seen it at Deal Extreme but am not sure which one you are talking about – there are several. I got mine from UKBUMPKEYS. Shipping was a killer, but there was nowhere else to get one.

  8. Nicely done, Bill.

You'd think the Chinese would err on the side of giving us _less_ metal. Oh well, Nicholson to the rescue.

I think we need to band together to form the WD-40 club. There are a lot of haters out there.
