(961) Review: Sparrows Reload Kit (w/How to)

LockLab is Fan funded!  Help pay for stuff to review, break and talk trash about, and maybe even give away when we’re done.  Join the Tribe!

My vises are made by Panavise, a U.S. Company.  The one with the wide jaws is the model 350.  The smaller one is the model 301. Both have the 312 Base mount – www.panavise.com

  1. I’m quite new to the lock-picking hobby. I recently purchased the Sparrows “Night School” set. Then I saw the “Reload Kit’ on the Sparrows site and was considering to buy. Bill’s review pretty much made my decision easy, I purchased it the next day. This is an excellent inexpensive add-on, that basically makes the “Night School” practice locks “customizable”. A fantastic piece of kit. What’s better for a beginner than to learn how to take apart/reassemble his/her own practice locks? Brilliant! If you own Sparrows practice locks this is a no-brainer. Quality throughout at a great price.

    1. My thoughts exactly. I saw the review and decided I’m going to get one, I’m just waiting to see if I’m one of the lucky few to win one from the lock lab first.

  2. Wow ! Real nice little kit. Do they (Sparrows)or other mfgr make repinning sets or practice type cores (bible/core)for Quikset type locks??

    1. LAB makes dedicated repinning kits for every manufacture you could imaginr. This kit should work on Kwikset cores though if you’re just wanting to get started repinning.

  3. Just looked on Sparrows site for the kit and the locks. The kit is listed at $19. Did the price go up that fast or maybe I am doing something wrong on the site. I put my address in the US and it still shows 19 for the price… this is still a massively low price but just wondering the discrepancy in price you quote versus the price on the site. Thanks for all the very useful and entertaining information as always!

  4. Mystery revealed. Thank you for that easy lesson on re-pinning locks. That Sparrows reload kit is perfect for a beginner such as me. (along with the practice locks, of course)

  5. Great video. As all the others. I started with your videos and without them I won’t be keeping my interest for lock picking as I do. Don’t stop doing this! Thx

  6. I saw that set a few days ago after someone mentioned it on r/Lockpicking and it’s just what I’ve been looking for. The price is amazing too considering that most pinning mats are thirty bucks before shipping and pinning kits, while also way bigger than I’ll probably ever need, are $100+. I don’t have the space for a dedicated lock shop so this kit is perfect for my needs. I’ve already entered my name and email for the drawing, but if I don’t win the Sparrow’s black Friday coupon codecis this coming weekend. So I’ve got that going for me, which is nice.

  7. I just ran across your videos. They are very interesting. I would like to learn how to do it. I have not tried yet, I hope I get a chance to get the practice kit. Thanks for the videos.

  8. Could you explain more about disc detainer locks
I have an oxford hardcore lock with an hour glass key way even with a front and back tensioner I can’t get in the key way to pick it
    Any ideas ?

  9. I went to the fan appreciation give away button. I clicked on all of them and couldn’t find where to enter

  10. Hey Bill! Long time subscriber here at the lock lab (2013) and im in a bind … I like to practice on my Master 911 … I unfortunately SPP'd it and the core over rotated 180 degrees from its natural locking position and its now stuck in that position… Any advice? Much appreciated

    1. If you take the back (flat side) of another pick, or use something like a Peterson knife, and press all the driver pins up simultaneously while lightly tensioning it should let the core rotate back around

  11. Now this is really a great give a way.🔓 What a good idea on the locks, not a bad price,💲 same with the kit. 🔏Very In formidable Mr.Bill. Thank you. 🔑

  12. Amazing kit!! I wish I didn't already buy myself a christmas gift from sparrows!! Keep the videos coming Bill!! Also, please accept my father-in-law's Vietnam lock!!! My wife would love nothing more than to see it picked!!!

  13. I saw those mini pinning mats on their website earlier today and immediately said I'VE GOT TO HAVE THAT! for a good small pinning tray the price is outstanding!
